Project Runway: No Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Style

posted by RF Club, Group AdministratorSaturday, September 18th 2010 @ 1:44 AM (not yet rated)

This episode was a snooze fest and this is from a history teacher. You think I would have been excited and loved this one!!   I know the legend of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis but in all honesty she was before my time.  I wasn't even born when President Kennedy died.  I felt bad for the designers because I am older than them therefore they must have really been struggling with this challenge.    Yes, I understand in fashion you should have a sense of history but it is just that history.  In addition, looking at pictures of Jackie Kennedy Onassis doesn't clearly explain why she was an icon.  I am assuming, the judges assumed the designers had the background knowledge.  In addition, Project Runway assumed  the audience understood Jackie Kennedy Onassis impact on fashion.  That is some huge assumptions.

The designers all struggled with this challenge.  Each and every single one of them with one exception, MONDO.  Mondo who surprisingly admitted to having a picture of Jackie O.

What is the " Jackie Kennedy Onassis fashion"?  In a nutshell, The woman had a way of mixing classic fashion with the fashion of the time.  Therefore, she never looked 'trendy' yet she never looked 'dated'.  Dare I say, Jackie O, had an Audrey Hepburn quality air to her.  Mondo, knew all of this!!  Mondo kept his designer style but he was true to Jackie O.  I must admit Chris and Ivy did alright jobs but Mondo was clearly the winner!  The reason?  He understood Jackie Kennedy Onassis.

The designers on the bottom were on the bottom because they didn't understand Jackie Kennedy Onassis.  In addition,  two of them don't have their own sense of style which created a double whammy!   In the end, I do believe that is what sent Michael Drummond home.  The outfit was horrid.  I mean could you see Jacqueline Kennedy ever wearing that thing??  In addition, I think the judges where unable to see MICHAEL DRUMMOND in the design???  For instance, Andy's outfit was completely wrong for Jackie O BUT it was ANDY!

Now, Valarie, she is a special case.  Don't you want to smack her???  I swear every show,  I just want to say, "Valarie, go with your gut and with what you want.  Make it YOUR DESIGN."  It is like you have to explain to dear little Valarie that it is a competition and she shouldn't be asking the entire room for advice a guidance, DAH???  Her outfit, was WRONG but it was VALARIE in the end.  Unfortunately, Valarie had no handle on 'The Jackie' look and she could not transcend her look into a 'Jackie O' look and then she begged for help it was just painful to watch.

We get to the end and the three bottom designers were not a surprise and you could even guess the face off.  I honestly believe the judges would have been justified sending both home.  Once again, the only saving grace for Andy was the fact that he stayed true to himself as a designer.  Unfortunately, for Andy, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis would never wear his clothing.

Usually, this is my point of the post of onto the 'good stuff'.  Not much 'good stuff'.
We seemed to see Gretchen come back to life.  Giving her advice all over the work room!
Ivy seems to be the designer they all think might not be such a designer and more of just a very talented tailor.  Gretchen informs us that there is nothing wrong with that!!!!
I do love Mondo and his special relationship with the Fabric at Mood.  I mean it is funny how he says, "All the Fabric is talking to him"  Maybe funny is not the right word???
I loved it when Tim Gunn came into the workroom to find it lacking energy.  Yeah, we felt the lack of energy throughout the show!!

I will admit judging was interesting.  Two out of the three in the top the judges had something very negative to say about the outfits???  I mean it was pretty clear who was going to win.  Heidi even said, "Mondo, you are the clear winner of this challenge".

I guess I just got a feeling from the judging that they were like "Wow, these designers have no clue who Jackie O was and her impact on fashion".

Guess what?  We watched the train wreck and we saw the entire episode.  It was interesting to watch an episode in which everyone seemed to be lost.  Assumptions are bad, a very bad thing!
