Real Housewives of D.C.: Ambivalent

posted by RF Club, Group AdministratorFriday, August 13th 2010 @ 10:38 PM (not yet rated)

The second episode of Real Housewives of DC has come and gone!  I am trying to remember that this is a new franchise and it takes a little while for the women to get their footing.  In addition, it takes us, the viewers, a little bit of time to get our footing, so to speak.  You know, 'the getting to know you dance'.  All  that being said, I am just having trouble focusing.  I can't quite put my finger on it.  I think part of the problem with the entire Washington DC setup is we all know that none of these women are true players in the city.  We, Americans, just know that our politicians, lobbyists and the very connected would never go on a reality show!  In Washington DC well, connections are all that matters.  See, in New York City, Orange County, Atlanta there are a lot of social circles and we don't really know the top tiers in those cities therefore the other shows can get away with throwing some women at us that they claim are in the IN crowd.  We all know that deep down the truly IN don't go on reality shows but the cities in question are large enough that it didn't matter.  New Jersey was the odd ball out but I guess it was close enough to New York City and 'We' just always assumed they picked a wealthy suburb and nabbed a few eccentric women.  So, back to Washington DC, um, we can't be fooled, no, that isn't quite right, we can't suspend our disbelief with this franchise.  That is it.  BINGO!!  I was struggling to figure it out and then whammy!!  See, with the other Franchises we can suspend the disbelief somewhat and buy into the "I run with a fabulous crowd"  or "We live in a gated community" and so on!!!

So, what to do when your viewers are not buying what you are selling?   You skirt around the DC issue!  Just like the other shows don't focus on the area. Focus on the women!  Once again, the problem, DC is different.  We know the High Roller players and deep down we want to see them, not these wannabes.  I am sure these women are just as fun and crazy as the other franchises but it is just hard to buy into all their high and mighty behavior when we know they really are not even close to the power!

Let us take a look at this episode woman by woman!

Catharine (Cat) Ommanney!
Wow, she is coming off as a bitch!  Worse they are insinuating she is racist!  Now, Paul Wharton tried to defend her in an interesting way.  He tried to tell Stacie Turner that it was not about being black it was the fact that Cat does not warm up to people.  I honestly have no clue.  We have only seen her being a bitch.  But, I can believe Paul, she is not a warm and fuzzy lady with anybody.  Cat refuses to read body language and yet she sends the signals out just fine.  Poor Mary at lunch.  I agreed with Cat but not in a million years would I have spoken to Mary Scmidt Amons that way or would I have said anything to her daughter let alone while her daughter was working.  Oh, and I would have tipped my kid 100 percent, my husband would have a fit but still 100 percent tip for my kid!!!  Cat needs to raise her own girls. PERIOD! Of course, we must talk about her behavior with Stacie's family.  Appalling.  Once again, not sure if she is racist or she just can't deal with the homey, laid back environment.  At this point, I would agree with Stacie and wonder if she is racist but if we give her the benefit of the doubt then she has serious trouble being genuine and I do think that is a problem with her too.  Cat likes to be the center of attention and that doesn't work in down home loving environments.  In those kind of environments people like Cat are seen for their superficial ways pretty quick.

Stacie Turner
I am getting to like her.  I liked the dinner at her Aunt's house.  Unfortunately, she really was not in the episode a lot.  We saw her again at Paul's birthday party but she didn't have a huge part in it or the rest of this episode.  Her husband was hilarious with his penis measuring tool.  The other two guys were dying and Mary's husband was hysterical!  Wow, really this is all I can write about Stacie Turner.  Yikes, not good for Stacie.  Kind of spells boring!

Mary Amons
She seems to be the glue.  All the women like Mary.  Mary tries to like all the women.  She seems to be the sweet one but something tells me she can hold her own.  I mean if Cat had kept going on at that luncheon I think Mary might have just snapped, now for Mary snapping, I think it would have been, "Oh, Cat, you need to stop now, you have no idea"  That would be Mary chastising Cat!  Mary has some daughter issues and we are seeing just the beginning of it.  We saw the conversation with her husband and him trying to tell Mary that maybe, just maybe, it wasn't appropriate that the daughter brought her clothes home to be cleaned when she moved out.  Mary just didn't get it.  I mean she couldn't understand why her daughter should use coin operated machines?  Helicopter moms, gotta love them.  The girl is 23?  That is sad when you can't let go!  Not that it is easy but it does have to happen and c'mon bringing your clothes home to be washed, Mary, Mary, (you should feel me shaking my head as I type).
Oh, and did you notice is Mary trying to be more REAL than the others and not always be in full makeup?  I like it.  It does feel more real.  My gripe about the New Jersey women. They are clearly in full  makeup for all their scenes and you do think, who wears that kind of makeup day in and day out??  I mean I understand the makeup in their interviews and at events but I like that Mary doesn't wear a bunch at home and tones it down when she goes out to lunch.  It feels more REAL!

Lynda Erkiletian

Okay, I am sure most people hate her. Oh goodness, I hate to admit this but I kind of like this lady.  Now, don't go all nutty utty on me.  I know she has some kind of wacky modeling agency that ambassadors use, wink, wink but I still like her.  I so hope she is not cough, cough a madame, I mean in my opinion.  I totally am not saying she is, for goodness sake I do not know the lady, I have no proof whatsoever, I am just thinking out loud!  But all that being said, I think she might be kind of fun to hang with for a night or two and secretly man I would love to see her punch out Michaele.  I think Lynda might like Michaele Salahi but she hates her husband, Tareq. Oh, that guy does seem like an ass, doesn't he?  Anyways, let us focus on Lynda.  It seems that her number modeling agency in Washington DC is actually having a little bit of trouble but yes, we do get to here it is all because of the economy.  Aren't you glad we have the Housewives around to keep telling us the economy sucks and then they all turn around and wear shit that I don't think you need to be wearing when you don't have the funds to cover the tag?  Now, we don't know about Lynda maybe she is just hurting a little and she has put money away to cover the down times?   But, it is hard to hear you say business is down and yet continue to spend extravagantly.
Did you enjoy the scene in which Lynda suggested a beautiful 14 year old needed to have work done to be model ready?  I actually hope that scene just ran together, meaning I hope she was talking about another girl needing work right after she talked about the 14 year old, just hoping!
Lynda seemed to genuinely enjoy herself at Stacie's home and I loved it when she said, "if you can't drink something then go in the bathroom and throw it down the sink."  I agree that is the gracious way of getting out of drinking something you can't stomach and not be rude to your hostess.
Now, the birthday party.  Oh, I loved her being over the Salahi's and them being over the top!!  Lynda was not taking their shit and Michaele can't take it because Lynda is not afraid of Tareq.  I think we are starting to get the picture!  I like Lynda, at least tonight (LOL)

Michaele Salahi,

In my opinion Michaele Salahi is abused.  I think she is abused by her husband.  I had a friend in a similar situation.  I think Tareq controls Michaele.  It is sad.  I use to watch my friend and Michaele has a lot of the same signs.  It was interesting finding out she was the cosmetic girl.  It was stated her station has changed.  Yes, but did it change because of her husband??  My friend was solely dependent on her husband.  When a woman feels solely dependent on a man and the man knows it, wants it that way and uses his power it is hell for the woman.  I really have a lot of trouble watching Michaele Salahi.  I don't enjoy writing about her either.

I believe Michaele's husband is a social climber and he probably wanted her on the show.  If you notice Tareq is in a lot of scenes with his wife?
Now how to describe their scenes?  Over the top!  I think they want to make sure they are on the television.  The sad thing, they are coming off as pathetic, not as cool.  Tareq Salahi reminds you of that hometown car salesman that everybody laughs at over drinks. The limo with the cop escort?  What in the world??  Okay, and please explain the polo lesson and Michaele dressed like she has been riding for years, what a joke. Oh, and the entire scene at the birthday party. Pathetic.  I was so glad Lynda was being obnoxious, it made them look ridiculous and Michaele knew it.
Now Michaele is not innocent, oh no, she has her irritable points too! Michaele likes to play the "I'm important and so busy" what was up with what she did to Paul Wharton and not answering his calls?  You are hosting a person's party and you don't answer his calls or call him back??  Something is not right?  Michaele is a bullshitter.  She throws constant bullshit at everyone.  The hugging, the I love everyone, the kiss, kiss with everyone is getting old!  We got her and her husband's number.  Total impostors!

That wraps up Real Housewives of D.C. I am still not sure what I feel for this franchise but I am not loving it yet.  Oh, and just to let you know, I started watching the Housewives in the summer with the Atlanta ladies, their first season.   I was bored and flipping the channels and landed on the Real Housewives of Atlanta.  They hooked me.  I am not sure if the DC ladies would hook me?
